What is the difference between Agile and PMP?
The distinction between Agile and PMP is rooted in their function and scope within the project management realm.
The Project Management Professional (PMP) is a globally recognized certification program managed by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It provides a comprehensive framework for project management, incorporating the most prevalent practices and tools identified by PMI. The PMP certification encompasses various project delivery methods, including both predictive (plan-driven) and adaptive (change-driven) approaches.
On the other hand, Agile is a dynamic approach originally designed for software development in 2001. It has since transcended this scope, becoming widely adopted across various industries, driven by its adaptability to rapid changes in requirements and solution strategies. Agile fosters an iterative, incremental development environment that emphasizes customer collaboration, frequent inspection, and flexible responses to change.
In recognition of Agile’s prominence, the PMP exam has been updated to include Agile, with 50% of the exam questions being Agile-based. It’s essential to note that while Agile can be utilized in both project and non-project contexts (such as product development), the PMP exam concentrates on the application of Agile within the domain of project management.
The remaining 50% of the PMP exam focuses on traditional predictive approaches, which are more plan-oriented. Additionally, the exam covers hybrid methodologies, which combine aspects of both Agile and predictive approaches. Thus, the PMP certification reflects the versatility and broad applicability of modern project management practices.
